Bothering SuperCard

Post by richmond62 »

Well, I did:

------------

Richmond…

SuperCard's source is written in C++, based on the Apple Carbon frameworks that Apple promised would be a permanent dev environment for OS X. They lied… just like Steve Jobs lied about the future of HyperCard.

So I am not sure what you/anybody would do with the current source. It requires a complete rewrite from scratch in a different dev environment that is significantly more opaque.

Plus the market for Mac users that actually want to program their own computer now-a-days is practically zero… they've come to the Mac based on their usage of the iPhone/iPad.

Regards,

Scott Simon

Richmond,

Your question suggests that SuperCard's current source code is usable going forward… it isn't. Despite Apple's promises, both the language and frameworks SuperCard is based on are dead. A complete rewrite is required, using an opaque dev environment that simply is not designed to create an app like SuperCard. In addition to a ground up rewrite, it requires low level replacements for things like text handling that current frameworks don't support.

Despite Apple's promises
One wonders how LiveCode managed things then.

Just sent SuperCard this:

In that case is there any real objection your company can raise to releasing their source code
in a permissive form?

sincerely, Richmond Mathewson.

By rewriting to the calls, etc that Apple DID in fact carry forth with, is my guess, with a smattering of other languages here and there. I don't remember when SuperCard stopped and LC started, tbh, I wasn't looking to use either at that point in time on a Mac. (I would have WANTED to know about LC and what I think was mentioned as a pay-during-COVID drive, and a possible Kickstarter before that? But they flew under my radar...)

They're right at least in a fashion about the other bit. People want poke it and it works iDevices now... remember how long it was not hearing of a new Mac in the news? As a former ACMT, I was getting livid long before things moved forward.

As an aside:
coding it from the ground up might be somewhat easier if you were looking at documented APIs that *used* to work... I wish they were interested.

when SuperCard stopped
SuperCard is still for sale.

On SuperCard's website there are even details for those running 64-bit only MacOS
on how to set up an earlier version of MacOS inside an emulator to run SuperCard!!!!!!

One of the problems about these forums (unlike the LiveCode ones) is that you cannot edit postings after a few hours.

This is extremely bad when one spots spelling mistakes or other suchlike things that need sorting out.

Oh. Well then, that just makes your move that much bolder. And makes them sound quite sad, indeed.
