Cross Patch

Post by richmond62 »

I am wondering about patching my 2015 27" iMac to work with MacOS 14 (official ceiling MacOS 12), but, to be quite honest am a bit scared by this and would be grateful for anything from anyone who has done this sort of thing.

Does this mean one can update an existing install, or one has to start with a blank disc?

Best, Richmond.

I have done this on a mac mini, and also an unsupported macbook air.
I'd absolutely advocate you download Rescuezilla and flash that to a USB stick.
You can then boot off it by holding alt (or opt - old skool macs) and plug in a large enough external drive. It will help you make a full clone of the drive including rescue partition and EFI partitions with ease, and you'll have a safety net if things go bad.

Writing to ISO (Balena etcher seems to work well)

I prefer this method as it's outside of Apple's walled garden, so doesn't need an internet connection to then restore your computer in any way (and if the original installer is no longer being 'signed' by Apple, this method gets around all of that faff).

Thanks for that advice. However that's the sort of thing that'll have to wait until the Christmas holiday.
