Random Rant About Monterey
Virtual desktops. Poke this edge of the screen and get a note, this all-encompassing icon for the news, this one to switch desktops.
Remember the apps that had like "Speed Up Lion" kinda features? Is there one for Monterey? I want less of this crap (on an 11 inch screen) and not more. Plus I can accidentally hit one of those hot corners without even meaning to.
Which is what I'm off to do, disable what I can with the presented options, anyway.

If you have a look at my site
https://www.tsites.co.uk
Download "tweaker"
Actually, direct link
https://www.tsites.co.uk/sites/software ... .5_x64.zip
If you can open it, (because gatekeeper) and get the main screen up, ignore the message about unsupported os.
Navigate with the left and right arrow until you come to the most recent supported os and try some of the options on there.
It's all written in LC/OXT anyway.
Don't blame me if this eats your OS. PLEASE DO A BACKUP FIRST
Lots of this may be broken on newer MacOS versions. Most of it only messes about with changing defaults.apple.com files, but I'd still make a bootable backup in Time Machine, SuperDuper, CarbonCopyCloner, RescueZilla...
https://shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/Sup ... ption.html
https://bombich.com/download
https://rescuezilla.com/
The whole point of making this, back in the day, was that I was trying to bend MacOS to my will and get it to behave the way I wanted, not the way Apple wanted: I eventually gave up though, as it became clear I was fighting a losing battle, and just moved to Linux instead.

Re: Random Rant About Monterey
I ain't skeered o' that there thing, sir! I made a day-one backup of my Monterey install!
... OK meanwhile, I've usually done tech of some sort whole life, and it scares me. A little.
Don't be scared if it steals my livestock, my bike, my car, etc -- that's an accurate, friendly warning.
I may hold back on this until I'm actually sitting in my actual new house.

Re: Random Rant About Monterey
Is there a Carbon Copy Cloner that isn't a jerk and doesn't want to only help me for a certain number of days, that *should* work on Monterey?
Like maybe, secretly... 5.x? I used to use CCC on the DAILY with none of that horse-radish; it... Just Worked.

Re: Random Rant About Monterey
That's the RescueZilla link above.
https://github.com/rescuezilla/rescuezi ... .jammy.iso
It'll back up Macs, Linux, Windows PCs. You need a USB stick to write it to and boot off. You then need a large external USB drive to back up to.
But it's free, has a straightforward interface, and makes bootable backups that can be restored for all the OS's above.
So you can mess any computer about however you want, and restore them knowing that any changes are undoable.
Oh, and good luck with the house move btw.

I *really* should have thought of that software, I've used it. Thanks like crazy! In addition, thanks for the karma! I am soooo ready to say "OK, it's done," sat in a tilting recliner and sipping a mug of Joe...

Re: Random Rant About Monterey
With my 2 main MacOS machines I use Time Machine about once a week, i.e. NOT Apple's automated settings.
HOWEVER:
- - -
You can never be too careful, as with any type of backup it can also go wrong.
Trick Question: which one of the people in the photo is Craig Federighi moonlighting as a FORTRAN programmer?

And, just to set things right: here's a Morlock:
- -
As Apple seems to be introducing More and More Locks into their systems I am obviously correct.

Re: Random Rant About Monterey
Dunno about that 'Tweaker': I have used TinkerTool for going on 20+ years with great admiration for the chap who makes it:
https://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerToolOverview.html
For MacOS 12 one needs Tinkertool 8
and for MacOS 13 & 14 one needs the, paradoxically, un-numbered version of Tinkertool.

Re: Random Rant About Monterey
Correct (and the other bit, funny!) about backups. They aren't backups until they are verified as working, too!
The Three-Two-One rule about backups...
3) The number of backups one should have in a business environment
2) The number of locations those backups exist, this used to tie to "two different places"
1) Hope you only need the verified backup that is within access to you!
Or so I was taught...

Re: Random Rant About Monterey
Just used TinkerTool (man, I LOVE that stuff) and I'll be considering the other methods mentioned earlier.
