Bonkers is as bonkers does . . . porting

Post by richmond62 »

I was mooching around on the MacUpdate website:

https://www.macupdate.com/

when I noticed 2 interesting things:

1. Finally GIMP version 3.0.0 is ready for download. 8-) 8-) 8-)

2. Something called 'Porting Kit':

https://www.portingkit.com/download

for getting Windows executables up and running on MacIntosh machines.

The THING that interested me most was this:

"With the latest engines and newer macOS versions, support for Apple Silicon Mac's is also growing in Porting Kit as well."

As I don't have an ARM Mac, nor access to them I have no way of testing whether that would work.

BUT because I really love banging my head on the wall I thought I would try to use the thing to try and get OXT Lite 1.10 for Windows running on MacOS 12 INTEL.

How this will work in reality is another big Q as, while Mac apps come as disguised folders containing all their components the Windows version of OXT Lite has an executable inwith a folder containg all the other bits-and-bobs.

I don't what the thing is doing, but it might actually sort out WINE on MacOS 12 (which is a headache many people have experienced).

"Something may have went wrong"

Mind you: there's some seriously crappy attempt at English grammar.

Hmmm . . . .

Appears to interfere with itself:

A complete busted flush as far as I can tell.

Yes, the portingkit uses Wine (and bits of crossover as well).
It used to be the method of choice for the portingteam (who's site has since gone), but offered various wine wrappers for various windows-only games on MacOS.

It doesn't really get you any further forward in terms of being able to run intel programs on your ARM mac. For that you'll need Whisky. Used as a game wrapper for ARM macs now, but absolutely capable of running OXT/OXT Lite on MacOS in a wrapper (after being configured and set up). There's a few hoops to jump through (involving making bottles).

Kdjanz has also already confirmed that this method works for Arm macs too. (back a while ago now)

Well, as documented by many people, WINE on MacOS Monterey INTEL is a load of old bollo: so I thought . . .

I used Whiskey on an M1Max Studio and it worked fine in a simple kick the tires type run. I did not try anything too strenuous or try to make executables though. But it was usable and not too slow at all.
