Live Linux disk on 32-bit laptop

Post by richmond62 »

So; having got fed up with Debian 32 + XFCE on Dad's old laptop (extremely clunky) I installed the antiX-OXT system . . .

1. Running Live is worked like a charm, and internet connexion was easy over WiFi.

1.1. OXT Lite 1.10 fired up 'just like that'. 8-)

2. After installing on the laptop's Hard Drive cannot get internet to work at all . . .

2.1. This is bad for an awful lot of reasons . . .

2.2. Want to get LXQt on the thing as the 'standard' GUI is so minimalistic that it does not really 'thrill my gorilla'.

Here I am running from the Live USB stick again: will reinstall and hope that this time auto-detection of the network happens.

That's both funny and distinctly crappy: a second install carried ALL my settings over from the live session.

Documentation about this is nonsense.

Sticking with JVM for the moment.

The version of Sea Monkey does NOT work with MEGA so it cannot download other versions of OXT Lite or tIDE.

Had to add Debian repositories to get hold of a version of Firefox.

I have never seen such a clunky Applications menu, the 'App finder' (which one needs as most of the installed apps do not appear in the Menu) suddenly stopped work so I could no longer access Synaptic.

While OXT Lite runs perfectly everything else seems about 20 years out of date (well, except 'folders' are called 'directories' which I remember from the Uni' of Durham mainframe in 1984) and has nothing that I can see going for it.

Could not decompress tIDE . . .

I am sorry but I have almost nothing positive to say about that experience.

HOWEVER . . . what it has inspired me to do is to install a 32-bit Debian-derivative distro on Dad's old laptop with either LXDE or LXQt, install OXT Lite and LCC to produce a "minimal system" that does work.

I will try these:

1. Peppermint OS: https://peppermintos.com/

1.1. Although Peppermint comes with XFCE as standard, I feel sure that a bit of LXDE or LXQT can be installed to cope with messageBox woes.

2. Bodhi: https://www.bodhilinux.com/

3. Debian + LXQt

What a marvellous way to start something. :)

This turns out to be a problem that pops up like a bad penny on all platforms BalenaEtcher is supposed to work on: queer as I have been using that for about 5-6 years with no problem whatsoever.

Erm: so downloaded BalenaEtcher again and installed it over the version on my machine (MacOS 12) and the thing worked: illogical.

So: just booting up Dad's 32-bit Toshiba laptop with Peppermint OS 32-bit . . .

1. Install onto laptop.

2. Go for LXDE or LXQt.

3. OXT Lite 1.10.

4. LCC 963.

The desktop symbolic link to the Calamares installer seems NOT to respond.

Err: OK: glacially slow.

Aha: finally started the installer up: and, looking at 'things' the initial install should take about 90 minutes.

PeppermintOS filed on Dad's old laptop with a "bootloader cannot be installed" message.

Having successfully installed Damn Small Linux in VirtualBox I would be grateful for a link to the 32-bit version of OXT Lite 1.10.

I have also successfully installed Bodhi Linux on Dad's old machine, so it would also be instructive to see if OXT Lite 32-bit would strut its funky stuff on that as well.

I've had this sort of issue with various Linux distros plenty, often times it's due to non-open-source drivers being required for the network/wifi chip-set to work, and so you have to enable that, during or post-install, somewhere will ask to allow proprietary drivers to install. Anyway I'm sure that's got nothing to do with installing OXT Lite (as your wording made it seem).

I've tried antiX once on very-old Asus netbook type thing with low-power Intel Atom CPU and it did install and work pretty well as far as detecting hardware, but yeah limited. Knoppix is another one I've used for that purpose (reviving old hardware) on occasion. Might not be the nicest looking but easy on the hardware requirements.

LCC 963 32-bit runs perfectly on Bodhi Linux 32-bit, so it would be interesting to see whether 32-bit OXT Lite 1.10 runs as well.

Presumably, Tom, you did run off a 32-bit Linux version of OXT Lite for your anti-Linux (which, by the way is full of Marxist bullshit), so I would assume he reason you are not allowing me access to it to try out on Bodhi Linux (which, by the way is full of Cod Buddhist-Hindu bullshit) is because you are worried about my 'fascist leanings' . . . ROFL

As a half-cock Hindu the Cod Dharma-Bum guff in Bodhi Linux does grate a bit: but, as the 'thing' works rather better on Dad's old Toshiba 32-bit laptop than anti-Linux I'll just gaze at my idol of Hanuman and not worry too much about the 'moksha' startup image. 8-)

So, if you could be so kind, I'd be extremely grateful (in fact, just to demonstrate that I'll issue you with a 'genocide exclusion certificate' for you and all your family . . . ).

Actually the first person in my sights is Mr Farage, who is a right %^&*(.

OK, OK, after the fairly tasteless jokes . . .

Could you just 'be a darling' and post me a link to a 32-bit Linux build of either (or both would be even better) OXT Lite or tIDE?
