New Boots and Panties . . .

The prototype for LC's new all-in-one IDE.
Not to my taste, but seemingly to a lot of other people.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of single window UIs, and can only see the usefulness of that for mobile platforms. Unfortunately, and I'm convinced it's only due to the popularity mobile devices, it has become a common thing to see that on a desktop platform. I expect it will only get worse on macOS as developers decide they only need to develop a single version of their apps that will run on both iOS and macOS (that's what "Catalyst" is about).richmond62 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 13, 2022 7:15 am https://forums.livecode.com/viewtopic.p ... 50#p215850

Here's an example of why single-window UI can be really annoyingly bad if it's not implemented well: Notice the inline "tools" palette in this App's UI, which was recently converted to single-window, you can only see half of the palette (and NOT the tool I wanted to select)! Extemely annoying when I have plenty big monitor / lots of screen real estate. They also changed this tools palette from a floating rectangular window into this inline circle thingy, for no reason I can tell other than "it's a popular thing on mobile" (at least for stylus-oriented drawing/painting apps).

I always thought they stole it from the SNES game "Secret of Mana," myself.

Re: New Boots and Panties . . .
I'm a boring, 60 year old fart who has been working with Runtime Revolution - LiveCode for 22 years,
and the IDE that was introduced with version 2 has suited me fine ever since.
But, I forgot, LiveCode is not a democratic set up, and pays little heed to its user base, but (mistakenly, I believe),
keeps pulling rabbits out of hats on the theory that this will attract more customers.
Their 'education' online class thing is a case in point about how wrong one can get things, even though
educators and educationalists (myself included) have been telling them something else for yonks.

If you want to have a "lover's tiff" with me about circular interfaces (which could be rather fun);
take a look at 'sugar':

I'd almost forgotten about those OLPCs, so much potential. Raspberry-Pi cool but before RPi existed!richmond62 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 15, 2022 8:16 am If you want to have a "lover's tiff" with me about circular interfaces (which could be rather fun);

Still, I can see only see a circular UI element working well it's locked to the center and ensured that no tools get cropped at the winder / screen bounds.
I guess it could be OK with a joystick/D-Pad as in some video games (as in the SuperNES example).
I did make a widget that is a circular virtual D-Pad with the idea that it could be used on touch-screens or in conjunction with my HIDAPI wrapper lib and a Game Controller: https://github.com/PaulMcClernan/OpenXTalk-VirtualDPad
I could see using it for a circular-of-fiths control for a music app too

Re: New Boots and Panties . . .
I always thought that would make a decent pie selection menu, but of course with lists to the side in the case of a ton of items (think a populated directory.)

Why would you buy this:

Re: New Boots and Panties . . .
I've had some contact with the author (Mark Wieder) who you may know also maintains some open source, the GLX ScriptEditor specifically is interesting (also we have his explicit permission to use any of that code such as it's 'autocomplete' features). Perhaps if or when there becomes no longer any commercial viability for his PowerTools he might donate it to the open-source community?richmond62 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 16, 2022 8:44 am Why would you buy this:

I remember there was a "PowerTools" for HyperCard too, I wonder if it's descended from that? I think that was about grouping HyperCard objects and doing things like moving groups of controls (or parts in HC dialect) from one stack to another.
This 'PowerTools' palette looks conceptually very similar to what I'd like oxtTools palette(s) to become, except with all vector / no bitmaps art (which looks like what LC Ltd is going to do too), and perhaps in multiple, snap-together-abled-palettes form.

Re: New Boots and Panties . . .
That freaking second one... they're going to ship with that? I'd say get rid of the text and shrink it until it's more the predecessor's size, or just use text buttons without the visual representation (if one is worried about someone not knowing what the text means, an example could pop up when the texts are pointed at.)richmond62 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 16, 2022 8:44 am Why would you buy this:

I'm begging you, tell me that second image isn't to scale...

Re: New Boots and Panties . . .
Apparently they are going to ship with 'that one', but, as we all know, LiveCode have said things, and then . . .
Presumably, in mitigation, as those icons are likely to be SVG images, the whole thing can be scaled.
Check the link I reffed earlier.

Re: New Boots and Panties . . .
Ugh. That's good and all, but what don't the labels say without the visualizations? Or vice versa? Or have the labels pop up within the borders of the icons as you point "into" them? Hopefully you at least get what I mean. Too much further scaling than that, and you won't be reading the text...richmond62 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 8:38 am Apparently they are going to ship with 'that one', but, as we all know, LiveCode have said things, and then . . .

Yes, I am going on holiday (England, Scotland), and that is one of very many reasons I do NOT
have the money to pay for another year's worth of whatever LiveCode thinks is best for me.
AND, no, I haven't missed my bundle: I am halfway through packing it.

In fact... I see a lot of this in it... minus the objects at the left, note how they're not big, fat buttons. And this is Microsoft UI work we're talking about. But they got docking!

Yes, well, quite: I seem to remeber that from VB 5 about 20 years ago.
